The Importance of Quality Management on Structural Materials

To curtail the proliferation of substandard building materials within the Philippines is one of the major platforms of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) nowadays after a series of disputes has arisen in relation to this pressing issue.

Last year, articles about low-quality steels; which were found to be underweight, with low elongation, or undersized, circulated the mass media and were said to set territories and flooded numerous hardware stores and establishments predominantly in Southern Luzon and some parts of North Luzon.

As part of the department’s initiative to foster a nationwide market monitoring and standards-enforcement campaign, DTI affirmed yesterday that it would identify the establishments that supply substandard structural materials in the market through publishing a list of these stores as well as those reputable suppliers that sell quality supplies.

And as we know, a building’s structure is much more than walls. Such infrastructures and foundation heavily rely on a variety of structural materials that should adhere to the highest possible standards in order to fortify and support the establishment under extreme tension or strains.

Here are the possible hazards and risks of using structural materials that are found to be low in the standard prescribed:

1.) It poses safety hazard.

In many building projects, the foundation and installation period is an important phase to monitor since these involve the finality of pre-construction planning and design — putting the virtual design into the sphere of reality. Alongside, it is also the phase where materials are being closely examined and inspected to make sure these have met the necessary standards depending on the type of structure.

Now, if we will be considering the usage of substandard or faulty structural materials, it can be expected that this action could yield to potentially dangerous consequences due to poor mechanical properties in strength and sturdiness of the materials. They could easily fracture or break even during the initial phase of application thus, elevating the possibilities of injuries and accidents in the field.

2.) Using substandard materials elevates maintenance cost.

Quality materials, whether in construction or other industries, entail savings on cost because of high-quality standard that guarantees long life expectancy. If we will nurture the idea of using structural materials that are substandard, it allows the possibility of frequent maintenance thus, elevating the maintenance cost of the structure.

Truth be told, it is essential for you to make sure that your initial investments as of today will pay off in the long-term. Through maximizing superior building materials, the project’s blueprint will eventually translate to a high-quality establishment that does not demand overflowing replacement expenses in the future.

3.) The structure’s integrity is severely compromised.

For any project you undertake, you get what you pay. If the selection of materials is overlooked, the stability of the structure will surely bring into disrepute. A flawed implementation of the project through utilizing substandard materials will create barrier to the very nature of the construction process.

For example, here in the Philippines, our countrymen have suffered a countless number of disasters like typhoons, earthquakes, and other calamities that demands sturdy and resilient structures to minimize life loss and injuries. With that, it is imperative that these structures like houses or buildings will negate the risks associated with calamities by being fundamentally strong and durable.

If the establishment failed to deliver due to variations in quality management and lack of sophistication or resources, the lives that rely on the success of such projects will be seriously compromised.

Any construction project built for public utilization should be carefully and competently constructed. And one way of assuring quality management is through clarifying the standards necessary for materials and the requirements that the workers should vigilantly considered.

It is of paramount importance to be diligent in locating the accredited and dependable suppliers or providers in order to reduce the potential conflicts and liabilities caused by substandard structural materials.

Conforming to the desired specifications and standards will greatly result to upgraded design strength, improved safety, and ensured public trust.
