In the coil shearing process, a large metal coil is unwound and fed through a shearing machine equipped with straight blades that slice across the full width of the coil, producing flat sheets of a consistent, predetermined length. The resulting sheets maintain the full original coil width. Shearing is preferred when the required product is a flat sheet — for roofing sheet blanks, structural plate pieces, or any downstream fabrication that starts from a flat format. The process generates no heat and produces a clean shear edge with minimal burr.
Coil slitting uses a set of circular rotary blades (slitter knives) spaced at the required widths to make multiple longitudinal cuts through a wide master coil in a single pass. The resulting strips are re-wound into individual narrow coils for downstream use.
Slitting is the foundation of the steel distribution supply chain — it allows a single wide master coil to be converted into dozens of narrow-width strip coils matched to specific product or machine requirements. Edge quality is monitored carefully: burrs, camber, and waviness are controlled through blade gap adjustment and strip tension management.
For projects requiring both narrowing and sheeting — such as converting a wide hot-rolled coil into multiple narrow flat blanks — the shearing and slitting lines work in tandem.
The coil is first slit to the required strip widths, then the strips are fed through the shearing line and cross-cut to the required sheet lengths. Lead time depends on the size and complexity of the order. Typical batch processing — from pre-treatment through quenching and inspection — takes 1-3 working days. Large fabricated assemblies or high-volume orders may require additional time; our team will confirm scheduling at the time of order placement.
Materials must be free of oil, grease, paint, or weld slag before the hot-dip process. While our pre-treatment tanks handle standard oxidation, heavy coatings may require mechanical stripping or grit blasting prior to arrival at the facility.
